Every time a movie fishes for an Oscar or wants to preach some message they always have to have an argument scene with the characters shouting at the top of their lungs. When it’s done right it can be a powerful release of emotions. If done wrong this can be seen as cheap emotional manipulation by the filmmakers.
This can be undone by a variety of reasons including but not limited to
- Bad acting
- Pretentious writing
- Out of place morals
- Uncharacteristic fourth wall breaking
- No build up or reasons whatsoever for the outburst
In this article, we will take a look at 5 of the worst outbursts (I’ve seen), whether from movies or TV.
#5: Star Wars: Attack of the Clones – Anakin’s Little Genocide
The Star Wars prequels have undergone a revaluation in recent years. However, Attack of the Clones was heavily weighed down by Anakin Skywalker’s portrayal that jumps from unemotional to overemotional with no segway whatsoever.
However, my problem with this scene is not its performance but that everyone doesn’t seem to be put off. Anakin just confesses to Padme that he massacred an entire village. and instead of running the hell away like a normal person she just shrugs it off and says it’s only human to be angry.
#4: Alexander – Every Scene
Alexander is something of a black sheep of big-budget epics and the main reason for that is Colin Ferrell’s ridiculous overacting. The problem here is that we are supposed to like him, but he is so sporadic that you cant point a reason why. Half the cast gets into shouting matches for no reason. It probably wouldn’t be a problem if it were just one scene, this happens throughout the majority of the film. To add to the misery, this movie is over 3 hours long.

#3: Vikings – Bjorn’s Town Hall
(Spoilers for Season 6)
In this scene, Bjorn Ironside is grieving over the loss of his mother Lagertha. After Vitserk confessed he murdered her after confusing her wounded limp for Ivar the Boneless. When Bjorn confronts him in the throne room, his acting is so bizarre that it makes a very serious emotional almost funny to watch. Sometimes this is what happens when you have non-native actors do Scandinavian accents.
#2: 13 Reasons Why – The Hallway Rants
This is a show controversial for a number of reasons mainly its romanticized portrayal of suicide, however, this film goes to such lengths to bash the message on the head that it becomes more of a statement than an organic story. If it is full of emotionally manipulative moments particularly in the later seasons.
This happens a lot with the main character clay Jenson who’s sadly devolved from a genuinely sympathetic character to a hatable audience mouth peace trying to be the voice of reason.
In this scene, Clay notices some new students and gives them a tour, overcome with grief for his friend Hanna, and goes on a tirade against the school. It’s like every melodramatic scene when they spur every in-your-face line ending with “welcome liberty high” right a the camera. I can see this work as a stylized Spike Lee film that is often half satire, but this is a drama meant to be 100 percent serious and close to real life, but it’s so ham-fisted that it becomes just emotional manipulation.
In one of the most ludicrous moments in the series the film’s protagonist. emerges from hiding after a school shooting drill. the problem is the principal never bothered to inform the students or staff. already this show has lost touch with reality. but when clay gets mad and actually took an officer’s gun (by the way shitty security guards) it actually gets almost comical how over the top he gets. My problem is that the show despite its flaws tried to take place in reality (at least the 1st season). however, this is just breaking reality just to make some kind of vague political statement. Especially since Clay suffers no Ramifictions, no expulsion, no Jailtime. Consequences, Whats that?
#1 The Room – So Bad, It Became a Legend
It’s about time I go for a film whose acting is so bad it’s legendary. When A drama tries to eschew emotional sympathy from its audience but the coked-up performance (and the whole vibe) make it an unforgettably hilarious watch.
