About a year ago, we wrote extensively about a controversy in more recent historical dramas. Specifically, where diversity quotas started pushing actors of color into roles that portrayed historically white characters. “Blackwashing” or “Brownwashing” history in a way that more resembles exploitative tokenism rather than a genuine push for inclusivity.
Of course, this trend lent itself towards a chorus of fan backlash from the openly bigoted, tragically under-represented, and painfully objective history crowds alike. A similar backlash has started in recent years against particular fantasy adaptations.
This controversy – as to what role we choose to incorporate diversity in fantasy – is very thin between legitimate criticism of one’s art and blatant bigotry. In these following few articles, we will attempt to cover the full gambit of crazy on both sides of the controversy – but will inevitably be labeled as pariahs no matter what nuanced opinion we hold…
